I2OL Scheme

The I2OL scheme is how KBI Netherlands organises and supports participation in three international technology olympiads: IBCOL (blockchain), IDSOL (data science), and IQCOL (quantum computing).

Team-based projects in blockchain and trust technology (BCTT). Dutch participants compete locally and advance to the global IBCOL finals.

Understanding I2OL

One scheme, three olympiads

The I2OL scheme groups the Netherlands' official participation pathways for three international technology olympiads under one structure. Students typically choose one track — blockchain, data science, or quantum computing — and build depth in that subject through a full competition cycle of preparation, submission, and presentation.

KBI Netherlands supports IBCOL NL, IDSOL NL, and IQCOL NL locally: registration guidance, workshops, judging connections, and pathways to international finals. The scheme name groups all three in one place — it does not mean they are a single combined competition.

Choose your olympiad
Register for IBCOL NL, IDSOL NL, or IQCOL NL — one primary track per cycle unless competition rules state otherwise.

Prepare and compete locally
Workshops, team formation, written submission, and Netherlands presentation under I2OL rules.

Advance internationally
Top Netherlands teams advance to the global IBCOL, IDSOL, or IQCOL finals for their track.

ETO pathway (where applicable)
Qualification or invitation to ETO Western 2026 — 8–9 October at InHolland — follows ETO's separate criteria. ETO is not the finals of IBCOL, IDSOL, or IQCOL.
Institutions

Bring I2OL to your institution

Universities, hogescholen, and secondary schools in the Netherlands can apply to host an official I2OL qualifying round. Hosting gives your students direct access to the international KBI olympiad pathway and positions your institution as a local hub for emerging-technology education.

FAQ

Common questions

No. Most students focus on one I2OL track per cycle. The scheme name reflects a shared organisational home — not a requirement to compete in all three domains in the same year.

No. Each olympiad has its own international finals. ETO Western 2026 is a distinct showcase event open worldwide for outstanding work in BCTT, DSAI, and QCIT — it operates under its own separate criteria. See the ETO Western 2026 page for details.

I2OL hosting is open to institutions in the Netherlands. Institutions in other countries should contact the relevant KBI chapter or the global KBI team at kb.institute.
